You probably cant hold one because your using a wireless router, youll have to open your ports.

Wirelesses are bad to use for servers, it would be best to have the computer, running as a server, directly connected to the router. Secondly is that you need to have your ports forwarded to your computer, 27015 udp(and tcp for rcon access on a dedi.). And lastly, cable internet connections have been known to be notoriously bad for running servers over, dsl works better with it's consistent speeds and ping.

First you should see what the ip address to your computer is and go into the router web interface and forward the ports to your computer. To see what your ip address is you and open up the command prompt and type ipconfig, your private ip address would look something like 192.168.x.xxx. your friend should be able to connect to you if you give him your external ip address.

You have to turn off your firewall, and if your using Vista, you have to run it as administrator. Then host a LAN server, and if Hamachi is running and both connected to 1 common server, it should work.

Is that it? Thats all I have to do then someone could join my public server? hmmm.....have you heard of the mother board brand "LAN Party?" Me and my dad saw it when we whent to infotech. My dad told be those motherboards are best used for servers, how much would you say that would cost me if I where to replace the motehr board I have with me now for the LAn party mother board? I either might spend my money to buy a new motehr board and replace it with either my old comp's motherboard and turn that into a server(With parents permission) or with the my current comp that im using right now motherboard.

The mother board shouldn't matter all that much as long as it's stable and you have a reasonable fast cpu and have at least 512mb-1gb of ram. The old computer I ran the server off of is a laptop lol.

It's no the dl speed on your connection you should be looking at but the upload speed, since the server would use more uploading bandwidth then downloading bandwidth.
